ABOUT US
The Club Baseball Team at Northern Michigan University is formed to create a competitive level of play for those students interested in playing baseball competitively at the next level. Our objective is to establish and maintain a high level of competition on the field while pursuing excellence in the classroom. Our secondary objective is to establish a foundation for the University to build on if and when it desires to form a school-sponsored baseball team.
The concept of club baseball is a collegiate club baseball program allowing students the opportunity to continue playing competitive college baseball after High School. Brandon, after being elected President of the 'Cats Club, has successfully put together enough talent to be accepted into the NCBA league in order to compete for a Club Baseball National Championship. This year, we are definitely up for the challenge and hope to give people the opportunity to continue playing the game that they loved after high school, while positively representing their university.
Direct quote taken from a letter of recommendation that Christian Smith, the Vice President of Division II Baseball Operations/Team Development, writes for players on our team: “The beauty of club baseball is that these organizations are student run. Scheduling, travel planning, equipment purchasing, fundraising, and the rest of the off field management falls directly upon the shoulders of the players. What makes these student athletes great is the fact they are simply playing for the love of the game. They aren’t playing for scholarships or to become professional athletes, they are playing because they love the game of baseball. Club Baseball also prepares these young men for life after college. It is always my pleasure to write letters of recommendations for these young men. Club Baseball is without a doubt a full time job and coupling that with their studies makes it easy for me to recommend these players to a possible future employer.”
IMPORTANCE OF CLUB SPORTS AT THE UNIVERSITY LEVEL: The following is from an online edition of their version of a campus paper (The Daily Campus) at University of Connecticut in April of 2011: “Club sports afford students an opportunity to compete as a representative of their esteemed university. More importantly, they offer the average student a chance to participate in a team that they simply do not have at the varsity level. It offers them the chance to continue to develop skills of coordination, courage, responsibility, strength, speed, and teamwork in a formal setting. Club sports are important because they teach regular students the value of hard work and offer them nothing but the satisfaction of having achieved their goals as a reward. The opportunities that club sports provide to students are invaluable. In the coming months and years of necessary funding cuts, as a school, it is vital that we realize where our priorities lie. Club sports must continue to be funded and expanded in order for students to realize the fantastic goals they set for themselves. In these times of financial crisis, the education that club sports provide is even more vital than any time before. Why have club sports? Club athletics teach teamwork, responsibility and dedication. They teach students that sometimes they may give a lot, to get a little. They teach the value of winning and the value of learning from defeat. These are life skills that are directly applicable to the workplace, and to the future lives of our graduates. Each year, the Club Sports Council sponsors a talk for all of its student-athletes. This year's was entitled "The Complete Athlete." In truth, the title was not ambitious enough. Club sports do more than build complete athletes; they build complete students who exit in May of their senior year with more than a winning record or a title - they leave as complete people.”
